To Issa Rae And Others
I know what most of the responses will be when I post this page. If backlash is going to strike than please let it come in an orderly fashion. Living in an nation where opinions are regularly expressed freely, I hope mines could be accepted and heard with sincerity. For those that feel that telling the truth is wrong than I don't want to be right.
Airing on the HBO network there's a show that is called Insecure. The show stars the well-known actress Issa Rae. This particular show went on to have three seasons. However, I stopped watching it by the end of season one. Let's just face it the show gives a terrible message to young black women.
It's all starts off with Issa living with her boyfriend Lawrence in an South L.A. apartment.
Based off of my analysis of Lawrence from the first season he was a working progress. First, he was jobless. Secondly, he had some kind of idea that he wanted to take off the ground. Third, he somehow got a job at Best Buy. All of these things are happening to Lawrence at a constant pace, meanwhile Issa is living her best life with her friend Molly.
Eventually Issa becomes impatient and starts craving someone "on her level." She seeks no other than her old childhood crush Daniel King.
Based off of my analysis of Daniel from the first season he was an alpha male. First, he was an up and coming recording artist. Second, he had his own house. He also drove a nice looking car. In other words Daniel was everything Lawrence could never be.
Not to my surprise Issa cheats on Lawrence with Daniel. Once she did this she knew there was no turning back, no matter how hard she tried to hide it. Whatever one does in the darkest night comes out in the morning light. Indeed.
By the end of season one Lawrence finds out what happened between Issa and Daniel. He went off as expected. He even had the nerve to have some fun of his own. What does this say and show?
I'll tell you what this means. This means that shows like Insecure are feeding the ego's of a generation of young people, young black women in particular. The truth is that the mass media always reflects a group of people and how they interact with each other. This is true for the mass media of any time period. If this show is based in L.A. is this how black women act, think, and feel? Another question is are black women to be taken serious? Sorry folks these type of questions need to be asked.
To Issa Rae and others, I know that it is not easy to carry the burdens of a race and a gender. However, you have not had the best reputation either in the last decade. Shows like these may feed your ego's, but doesn't get you places in certain fields in the world. Although it's your life and you can make your own choices, I still wish you nothing but peace, love, and tranquility. One could only hope that you come to your sense in the next millennium. Cheerio.
