Decent People On Both Sides
What are the right words to say in the wake of a tragic event? What tone would you use? President 45 doesn't know how to answer these questions. The attack that took place on August 12, 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia took the life of one and left twenty-eight others injured.
While being asked questions regarding this tragic event 45 was at his establishment in Manhattan. Responding to one of the questions being giving to him 45 says "I'm not sure what footage you've seen, but I saw decent people on both sides." It's because of statements like these as to why we're having the tensions regarding racism and accountability. To be honest I wasn't surprised to hear 45 say what he said.
Can I rant for a minute? Thank you.
It all starts with a statue of General Robert E. Lee. This man was a well-known commander of the Confederate States Army. For those that don't know history the Confederate States Army represented oppression and totalitarianism. In other words everything that is the epitome of Trump. Anywhere that there's a statue of this man or any other confederate solider Klansmen and other white supremist go and pay tribute to them.
Seeing how dedication the UTR (Unite The Right) protesters were this taught me something valuable. If people could go and pay tribute to a statue of a person that represented evil, than I could go and pay tribute to statues of those that helped form and shape me in a positive way. I'm talking about people like MLK and Malcolm X. James Baldwin and Alex Haley. Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey.
Almost two years later I hope we all have learned a powerful lesson regarding our first amendment right. However, some of us have taken this for granted in more ways than one. Knowing the history of this nation racism and fascism will always rear it's ugly head. Until we as citizens can case aside our petty differences what could one do?
